PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior first baseman Alicja Wolny of Louisville was selected BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week for and junior Laura Winter of Notre Dame was named BIG EAST Softball Pitcher of the Week in the fifth weekly awards of the 2013 campaign.
Wolny helped the Cardinals go 4-0 last week, including a 5-4 win against No. 14/14 Michigan as Louisville improved to 20-3 on the season. The senior went 5-for-7 (.714) from the plate and drew eight walks (two intentional). Four of her five hits went for extra bases (two doubles and two homeruns) to record a 1.857 slugging percentage and .867 on-base percentage. The senior also scored six times and drove in six runs.
Winter went 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA and two complete game efforts against New Mexico State. The junior right-hander struck out 13 batters and allowed just one run March 8 and pitched a complete game shutout on five hits March 10. For the week, she allowed one run on nine hits in 15 innings, striking out 22 batters.
